Children at Camp

Talking Hands/Sign Language Camp

  • Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Grades: July 27 - 31

Sign language is now one of the most popular languages to learn and this camp is for kids in grades K – 8. Campers will learn about the deaf culture and some basic communication skills in that language, such as finger-spelling the alphabet, as well as signs for numbers, colors, and every day words such as: hello, good bye, thank you, etc. Campers will have a fun experience and will be able to share what they have learned with others at home, school, and play. They will also learn to sign the song, “Jesus Loves Me”, for their parents at the end of the camp week. The sign language camp will be conducted by Tricia Downey, who has been signing since childhood with hearing-impaired friends, having gained knowledge through experience as well as through classes, and later taught her own children to sign before they could verbally speak.

Character Development

At the YMCA we challenge our members, program participants, volunteers and staff to accept and demonstrate positive values to help us fulfill our mission. Our four core values are Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. These core values provide the framework for our program activities as we strive to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Financial assistance is available on a sliding scale to individuals who can not afford the entire cost. Stop in or call the YMCA for more information.

ORIENTATION NIGHT

We will be hosting a summer camp orientation night on Friday, May 29, from 5:30-7:30pm. This is the perfect opportunity for parents to come out and meet the staff, tour the site, and receive an activity calendar and more detailed information about our summer camp.
